Willie Nelson: 25 years ahead of his time

In 1981 Willie Nelson recorded a song about gay cowboy romance titled "Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly (Fond of Each Other)." On Valentine's Day, it was played on radio for the first time, on the Howard Stern Show. "The song's been in the closet for 20 years," Nelson said. "It's time for it to come out."

Nelson is 73 (CMT bio page), and has been married to his fourth wife since 1991.

This song was written in the 1980's by Texan Ned Sublette, that's why it's been "in the closet" for 20 yrs. Willie just recorded this thing last year. And it was previously covered by a gay punk band called Pansy Division in the 90's. And you can get a free copy of Willie's versio of song at http://www.armadillopodcast.com.

Ah! You're right!

This ABC News story credits Sublette.

And the story I originally found doesn't actually say that Nelson wrote the song. It just doesn't mention the composer.

Thanks for the correction!
