Uh... yeah, the Civil War -- that was definitely worse. Let's see... The Great Depression. The 1919 influenza epidemic, I guess. But that's about it. I can't think of anything else that was worse than this, or this.

That last story had a child-separated-from-his-pet coda. Now why, in the midst of all that death and misery, does this one detail make me cry?
