Read Alex Chee on the recent gigglefest over Laura Bush's performance at a recent banquet:

What bothers me though is Republicans borrowing the terms of the gay rights movement. John Tierney claiming Bush gets Bashed. No, Mr. Tierney, I think not. Bush does in fact come from a state where black men get tied up and dragged by trucks, and under his administration, young gay men and lesbians are getting beaten, murdered and burned alive as homophobes feel emboldened. That is in fact what bashing is.
