Focus on the Fundies

Tempers flared in the House of Representatives yesterday when debate on a military funding bill turned to the matter of the Air Force Academy proselytizing scandal. When a Democrat attached a rider condemning religious discrimination at the school, a Republican jumped up and said:

The long war on Christianity in America continues today on the floor of the United States House of Representatives... Like a moth to a flame, Democrats can't help themselves when it comes to denigrating and demonizing Christians.

Rep. John Hostettler, R-Ind., was made to retract his remarks.

Here's a typical example of Christianist thinking on the matter:

You want to know why the Biblical account of Balaam and the donkey (Numbers 22-24) is so important? It is the only time in history that God EVER spoke through a Democrat.

Ooh, zing! Balaam and the donkey! Truly, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a guide unto my path" (ps. 119).

I thought you might like that one. ;)

On the other hand, I addressed some important points in the blurb that preceded that little tidbit.

(1) We have cases of teachers who have been fired merely for having Bibles on their desks. THAT is anti-Christian bigotry exercised by the government. It's not like Israel or Obey--blinded by their anti-Christian zealotry--have bothered to oppose that form of repression.

(2) It seems that--to folks on the Left--ANY expression of religious faith is tantamount to "proselytizing". Many school districts have forbidden valedictorians from speaking of their faith in graduation speeches. Like cadet misbehavior at the USAF Academy, this is also an infringement on the First Amendment rights of others.

Obey and Israel were engaging in partisan grandstanding--injecting unncessary language in an APPROPRIATIONS bill regarding matters that were already under investigation.

In fact, the final report--while finding some issues with the USAF Academy in this regard, cleared them of institutional discrimination.

Thanks for the comments, though.
